• AUTHORS OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENT SURVEY FAIL TO NOTE MASSIVE OVERSIGHTS IN THEIR ANALYSIS

Posted September 1, 2017: by Bill Sardi

The most recent survey of dietary supplement use in the U.S. has just been published and it’s a shocker.

Almost a third (29%) of surveyed individuals that take dietary supplements use 4 or more of them on a regular basis.

While a considerable portion of postmenopausal women take calcium supplements about half as many take a mineral balancing magnesium supplement while a far greater number take vitamin D pills that help prevent calcifications that can possibly be induced by supplemental calcium.

Enslaved By Vocation Or Addicted By Choice To Hours In Front Of A Computer Monitor? You Had Better Down A Lutein Pill Every Day

A recently published report cites the fact that ~35% of people born 1965-1996 and now living in developed countries spend at least 9 hours a day in front of digital devices. Such intense use of digital devices has been found to have undesirable effects on sleep quality, alertness during waking hours and also fatigue, headaches, muscular, skeletal and visual strain.

  • Garlic abolishes risk for intravenous catheter infections in the intensive care unit

Posted August 17, 2017: by Bill Sardi

Hospital acquired (nosocomial) infections are common, particularly in the intensive care unit. Researchers gave a 400-milligram garlic pill to 47 patients and a placebo pill to 47 patients admitted to the ICU. Venous catheters were cultured to determine infection at the venous entry site and urine samples were taken. Here are the results of that study.

    Garlic Placebo
    Number of subjects 47 47
Infected venous catheter tip culture result 0 5
    Infected urine culture 2 (5.7%) 6 ((12.3%)

  • Every Individual With Macular Degeneration Should Supplement Their Diet With Omega-3 Fish Oil To Avoid The Advanced Stage Of The Disease

Posted August 6, 2017: by Bill Sardi

Researchers are making a link between advanced stage macular degeneration and a hormone secreted from central body fat.  The ramifications of this discovery are profound and are likely to save the sight of millions of senior adults.

First some background information.  When light receptor (photoreceptor) cells at the back of the eyes are deprived of oxygen, new blood vessels outcrop to counter this problem but invade the bloodless visual center of the eye (the macula).  The outcropping of these new blood vessels is called neovascularization or angiogenesis.

Eye doctors call this wet macular degeneration, which is the fast progressing neovascular form of the disease that can permanently destroy vision, leaving a subject legally blind.

Catastrophic Level Of Visual Decline Looms As Commonly Used Vision Test Chart Fails To Detect Progressive Visual Deterioration

Eye researchers have just now discovered that the commonly used vision testing chart does not adequately detect deterioration of the visual system in the early stages of eye disease while a more sensitive test that measures the ability of the eyes to adapt to the dark now points to a looming epidemic of preventable legal blindness.

An age-related eye disorder called macular degeneration is responsible for a majority of the cases of legal blindness in the American population. About 30% of senior Americans show early signs of the disease (cholesterol-like deposits at the back of the eyes called drusen).  But a far smaller number, ~9%, have actually lost visual acuity to this eye malady.  These figures are anticipated to rise dramatically as more and more Americans are living into their tenth decade of life.

  • Researchers Starve Cancer Stem Cells Out Of Existence Using A Simple One-Two Punch; Could Be Up To 100 Times Better Than Drugs At Killing Cancer Stem Cells

Posted June 11, 2017: by Bill Sardi

Doctors Knock Out Cancer Stem Cells With A Common Antibiotic and Finish Off Treatment-Resistant Stem Cells With Vitamin C

A common problem with modern cancer treatment is that even if 100% of cancer cells are eradicated at tumor sites and in the blood circulation, a small cadre of cancer stem cells may give rise to recurrence months to years later.  Oncologists are never quite sure they have cured this dreaded disease.  Failure to kill cancer stem cells is likened to killing all the weeds in a garden but never pulling out their roots.  [Ludwig Center, Stanford Medicine]

  • NEGATIVE NEWS REPORTS ABOUT DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS ARE “FAKE NEWS”

Posted April 22, 2017: by Bill Sardi

Despite the fact 71% of Americans take dietary supplements and 85% express overall confidence in their safety [Council for Responsible Nutrition at CRN.org], one would get the mistaken impression from news reports that the public is mindless and gullible to every sales pitch made by supplement makers.

There is no question major news sources create news to fit political, environmental, cultural or religious agendas.  Americans’ trust and confidence in mass media “to report the news fully, accurately and fairly” has dropped to an all-time low says The Gallup Poll.  Only 32% of Americans polled say they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the news media.  [Gallup.com]

  • Prostate Cancer Screening: Men Left To Figure It Out For Themselves

Posted April 19, 2017: by Bill Sardi

The US Preventive Services Task Force has issued a new statement on screening for prostate cancer that virtually eliminates any sanctions against doctors who perform needless prostate cancer treatment.

As background, in 2012 the same task force advised against PSA tests. Now a U-turn: instead physicians abrogate their responsibility to instruct patients by saying they have no specific advice on the topic of PSA tests and men can decide treatment options, including no treatment (active surveillance) on their own.

  • Why Your Cardiologist Should Have Prescribed Zinc During Your Last Office Visit

Posted April 14, 2017: by Bill Sardi

    Key points:

    • The provision of minerals plays a stronger role in saving lives from mortal heart attacks than any array of cardiac drugs including calcium blockers, beta blockers and statin cholesterol-lowering drugs.  Dietary fortification with major mineral electrolytes that control heart rhythm such as potassium and magnesium would save far more lives than statin drugs.
    • There is more evidence that zinc can reduce mortality rates for coronary artery disease than there is for statin cholesterol-lowering drugs.  A recent analysis shows statin drugs only prevent non-mortal heart attacks.
    • Zinc inhibits the formation of plaque (atherosclerosis) in the inner lining of arteries by virtue of its displacement of iron and reduced oxidation (hardening) of LDL cholesterol.
    • Cholesterol lowering drugs actually reduce protective zinc blood levels.
    • There is confusing science when it comes to understanding zinc and its ability to prevent atherosclerosis.  Failure to sort out that confusion has cost millions of lives.
    • Mineral supplement users are often advised to maintain a zinc/copper balance (10 to 1?) so as not to raise circulating cholesterol levels.  Yet up to 45 milligrams of zinc has been used without accompanying copper without adverse effects.
    • ·      Failed zinc studies may be explained by rapid excessive zinc supplementation that can induce zinc to bind strongly to its carrier protein (metallothionein) and render it non-bioavailable.  In this case, blood serum levels of zinc would be in the above normal range but zinc would not be bioavailable.
    • There are many confounding factors (zinc depleting drugs, high fructose corn syrup, copper piping and alcohol, calcium and iron pills that block zinc absorption) that are often not accounted for in controlled studies and obscure the realization that zinc therapy is an obvious way to save lives.
    • Supplemental zinc is suggested for all adults to maintain healthy arteries.  Dosage and forms of zinc are provided at the end of this report.

  • Modern Medicine Snubs Garlic’s Allicin While It Continues To Astound In Human Studies

Posted April 5, 2017: by Bill Sardi

The active principal in garlic, allicin, is being put to the test in human research studies and it is producing health benefits unparalleled by any prescription drug.

Is any drug known that simultaneously reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease by 64%, high blood pressure by 26% and chronic kidney disease by 32%?  A recently published study says habitual consumption of fresh uncooked garlic does.  The remarkable report documenting this attracts no news headlines.  [Journal Hypertension March 17, 2017]
