In 1993, in what was called “the most important finding that’s ever been made in the study of Alzheimer’s disease,” investigators reported a variation of the APOE gene, a protein that transports cholesterol throughout the human body, drastically increases risk for this memory-robbing brain disease. The APOE gene provides instructions for making a protein called apolipoprotein E. APOE regulates the clearance of beta amyloid brain plaque, which is a common hallmark of age-related brain disease. Carriers of the APOE e4 gene in their brain cells are at such an increased risk for memory loss that it is called “the forgetting gene.” Carry two copies of this gene and the risk is worrisome. Look at the risk chart below:

A newly issued guideline by the American Heart Association that categorizes adults with blood pressure of 130/80 as hypertensive (high blood pressure) compared to the old standard of 140/90, increasing the number of subjects for whom treatment plans should be initiated to 46% of the American adult population. This new guideline will largely pertain to adults in their 40s who have creeping elevated blood pressure.
Under guidelines issued 14 years ago, only 32% of American adults were considered hypertensive.

Aspirin kills. That is the news headline blasted around the world this week. [Daily Mail June 14, 2017] This fact was already known but it appears disease classification errors were hiding 38% of the aspirin-induced brain hemorrhages and gastric bleeding episodes from reviewers (were they intentionally covering this up?). For senior adults over age 75 the risk of an aspirin-related death or disabling bleeding event is as likely as the stroke prevention it promises!
Super-seniors are at the greatest risk. The risk for major bleeding or fatal events associated with aspirin use was 0.5 percent in under-65s, rising to 1.5 percent for those aged 75-84 and nearly 4.1 percent for over-85s. [The Lancet June 13, 2017]

Immunologists and public health authorities are going to have to re-think the idea of mass flu vaccination in a growing population of obese Americans. A striking study shows flu vaccination did increase antibody titers (concentration) among healthy and obese individuals, but that failed to protect obese individuals from the flu. In fact, obese vaccinated individuals were twice as likely to get the flu compared to healthy vaccinated individuals. Given over 100 million Americans elect to get a flu shot annually and a third of the adult population is obese, vaccination programs appear to be counterproductive. [Daily Mail June 7, 2017]
Immunologists identified an impaired T-cell response as the cause of the problem. The study was published in the International Journal of Obesity.

Modern medicine has done it again. Long-term use of drugs called bisphosphanates designed to prevent bone loss with advancing age have now been associated with higher risk of any clinical fracture. Researchers say: “These results add to concerns about the benefit of very long-term bisphosphonate use.” [Journal American Geriatrics Society May 29, 2017]
Historically a bisphosphonate (Fosamax) caused its manufacturer to pay $27.7 million in a settlement over bone deterioration in the jaw among 1200 people in 2013. [Reuters Dec 9, 2013]

The first study comparing the health of vaccinated and unvaccinated children has been published. Mothers of home-schooled children were surveyed. A population of 405 vaccinated versus 261 unvaccinated children were compared. Here is what the survey revealed.

The US Preventive Services Task Force has issued a new statement on screening for prostate cancer that virtually eliminates any sanctions against doctors who perform needless prostate cancer treatment.
As background, in 2012 the same task force advised against PSA tests. Now a U-turn: instead physicians abrogate their responsibility to instruct patients by saying they have no specific advice on the topic of PSA tests and men can decide treatment options, including no treatment (active surveillance) on their own.

The active principal in garlic, allicin, is being put to the test in human research studies and it is producing health benefits unparalleled by any prescription drug.
Is any drug known that simultaneously reduces the risk for cardiovascular disease by 64%, high blood pressure by 26% and chronic kidney disease by 32%? A recently published study says habitual consumption of fresh uncooked garlic does. The remarkable report documenting this attracts no news headlines. [Journal Hypertension March 17, 2017]

Getting behind the curtains on the stage of modern medicine like I do, one gets the distinct impression that people are just being allowed to die on time for the benefit of life insurance companies and/or to fulfill covert population control agendas.
Modern medicine prescribes replacement thyroid, estrogen, and insulin but fails to prescribe another important hormone, leaving millions of senior Americans with a weak immune system and vulnerability to infection and cancer. The only proposed remedies are stem cell injections or organ transplants that are expensive and impractical since replacement of this hormone would be universal among adults over age 60.

How does American medicine shed itself of practices that are no longer backed by science and deal with patient fears and at the same time deal with government efforts to produce more jobs in the healthcare sector?
How does American medicine shed itself of practices now invalidated by science? With Medicare facing a $23 trillion shortfall there certainly are no funds for extraneous medical tests and treatments that science no longer substantiates.
