Doctors Knock Out Cancer Stem Cells With A Common Antibiotic and Finish Off Treatment-Resistant Stem Cells With Vitamin C
A common problem with modern cancer treatment is that even if 100% of cancer cells are eradicated at tumor sites and in the blood circulation, a small cadre of cancer stem cells may give rise to recurrence months to years later. Oncologists are never quite sure they have cured this dreaded disease. Failure to kill cancer stem cells is likened to killing all the weeds in a garden but never pulling out their roots. Immunologists and public health authorities are going to have to re-think the idea of mass flu vaccination in a growing population of obese Americans. A striking study shows flu vaccination did increase antibody titers (concentration) among healthy and obese individuals, but that failed to protect obese individuals from the flu. In fact, obese vaccinated individuals were twice as likely to get the flu compared to healthy vaccinated individuals. Given over 100 million Americans elect to get a flu shot annually and a third of the adult population is obese, vaccination programs appear to be counterproductive. [Daily Mail June 7, 2017]
Immunologists identified an impaired T-cell response as the cause of the problem. The study was published in the International Journal of Obesity.

Modern medicine has done it again. Long-term use of drugs called bisphosphanates designed to prevent bone loss with advancing age have now been associated with higher risk of any clinical fracture. Researchers say: “These results add to concerns about the benefit of very long-term bisphosphonate use.” [Journal American Geriatrics Society May 29, 2017]
Historically a bisphosphonate (Fosamax) caused its manufacturer to pay $27.7 million in a settlement over bone deterioration in the jaw among 1200 people in 2013. [Reuters Dec 9, 2013]

A recently published study hails high fiber diets as a preventive for wear-and-tear arthritis (osteoarthritis) of the knee. [New York Times, May 24, 2017; Annals Rheumatic Diseases May 23, 2017] Another recently published study corroborates the association between high fiber diets and reduction in knee pain. [Arthritis Care Research Nov 2016] But is all as it seems?
Not all sources of fiber are the same. Within whole grains (rice, wheat, oats) is bran that contains an iron-binding molecule called phytate or IP6 (inositol hexaphosphate). It is this molecule that controls the iron-induced inflammation in joints. Patients with arthritis of the knee are more likely to have high iron storage levels (as measured by ferritin; 20-70 is normal range). In one study patients with arthritis knees had a mean ferritin level of 273-655. [Scandinavian Journal Rheumatology 2010]

Despite the fact 71% of Americans take dietary supplements and 85% express overall confidence in their safety [Council for Responsible Nutrition at CRN.org], one would get the mistaken impression from news reports that the public is mindless and gullible to every sales pitch made by supplement makers.
There is no question major news sources create news to fit political, environmental, cultural or religious agendas. Americans’ trust and confidence in mass media “to report the news fully, accurately and fairly” has dropped to an all-time low says The Gallup Poll. Only 32% of Americans polled say they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the news media. [Gallup.com]

The US Preventive Services Task Force has issued a new statement on screening for prostate cancer that virtually eliminates any sanctions against doctors who perform needless prostate cancer treatment.
As background, in 2012 the same task force advised against PSA tests. Now a U-turn: instead physicians abrogate their responsibility to instruct patients by saying they have no specific advice on the topic of PSA tests and men can decide treatment options, including no treatment (active surveillance) on their own.
