The question of whether to take antioxidant supplements has arisen once again. I’ll chart the beginning of this debate back to 1994 when researchers erroneously and disingenuously reported that beta carotene pills raised mortality rates among smokers. That report seemed to be timed to sidetrack legislation in Congress that would spare dietary supplements from being declared drugs. The Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act was passed anyway, which suggests Congressional leaders didn’t even buy into the scientific propaganda.

What you won’t hear about stem cell technology is that it is a flop. Despite billions of dollars of investment money, it is going nowhere. In fact, what is going on today in research labs doesn’t even involve stem cells. You can read more about it at Dr. William Prather’s article entitled “The Unrealized Potential Of Stem Cell Therapy.” [DDD Magazine Oct 2013]
A problem with the stem cell industry is that it becomes so difficult to scuttle a research program that employs so many people at a time when unemployment is a national embarrassment. There are an estimated 6100 full-time employees working in regenerative medicine and over 100 companies involved in stem cell therapies. There were 537 patents filed for stem cell technology in 2007. The National Institutes of Health is reported to have spent $546 million on embryonic stem cell research. [StemCellAction.org] This perpetually promising industry is only in operation as long as it is government subsidized.

Nutritional supplementation may play a preventive, therapeutic or even regenerative role when hearing loss occurs. Frequently doctors are remiss in making nutritional recommendations. It is now a common practice for physicians to address every disease as if it were a drug deficiency in the face of published reports showing nutritional imbalances are at the root of most chronic diseases.
For example, confronted with a case of sudden unexplained loss of hearing, physicians impulsively inject steroids that have been shown to work no better than an inactive placebo. [Archives Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery June 2007] Yet there are valid nutritional approaches to emergent cases of hearing loss, as explained below.

You can read them all — all 279 of them at GoogleNews. Modern medicine can release falsehoods against one of the most promising dietary supplement ingredients and the news media will propagate it without question.
It’s obvious the nation’s health reporters mindlessly parroted the press release emanating from Johns Hopkins Medicine that errantly claimed the red wine molecule resveratrol (rez-vair-ah-trol) was of worthless value in reducing overall mortality among senior adults living in a wine-making region of Italy over a period of 9 years. Over 279 news reporters never doubted what researchers said. They just re-wrote the news story and hurried it into publication.

“Hundreds of deaths could be prevented” says the headline published at the UK’s online TELEGRAPH health home page. “Asthma sufferers are dying needlessly,” says health editor Laura Donnelly. Two-thirds of the deaths from asthma including almost all of those involving children could have been prevented with use of stronger-dose steroid inhalers. Health authorities called it a “frankly horrifying” blunder. Lower-dose inhalers were used because they were more economical. A leading physician said it was “a tragic waste of life,” and added that all patients should have access to high-quality care.
However the problem may be rooted in lack of proper nutrition, not in a drug deficiency. The medical literature is replete with reports showing vitamin D deficiency increases the severity of asthma attacks. [Hospital Pediatrics Oct 2013; Indian Journal Pediatrics Nov 6, 2013; Respiratory Research Feb 22, 2013] Vitamin D can be used without the withering of bone, cloudy cataracts and depressed immune system that result from chronic used of steroidal drugs to control asthma.
Physician indifference and ignorance are to blame for these avoidable deaths. ©2014 Bill Sardi, Knowledge of Health, Inc.

Suddenly there are a plethora of recent reports that indicate many of the common health practices promoted in recent decades have been a giant misdirection. Let’s examine some of them:
Like millions of Americans are you still taking a baby aspirin every day to prevent blood clots from forming in your coronary arteries that supply your heart with oxygenated blood?

In all the years of saying most men die with but not of prostate cancer, no one comes to the fore to explain why 30,000 men DO succumb to this disease annually. While the most common type of prostate cancer is slow growing and not life threatening [Group Health], men live in fear they will be among the 30,000.
There are an estimated 2.5 million men in the U.S. living with diagnosed prostate cancer, whatever that means. About 233,000 new cases will be diagnosed and ~30,000 will die of the disease annually according to the American Cancer Society. [American Cancer Society]

Modern medicine is so taken over by commercial interests, ranging from the delivery of healthcare in the clinic to the research labs at the National Institutes of Health, the regulatory agencies like the FDA and public health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control, all used to give a third-party government stamp of approval to a self-serving profession that is called “the best healthcare system in the world.”
In reality the U.S. has the most technically advanced disease-care system in the world. It is not committed towards promoting health but rather to delivery of repeated treatment to allay symptoms rather than address underlying causes of disease.
While the life expectancy in some backward nations exceeds that of the United States it never dawns upon the public that they are being gamed to ensure Big Pharma and Big Doctor has a steady flow of patients to treat.

A third of Americans are mixing dietary supplements with their prescription medications. [Reuters News April 29, 2014; Journal Academy Nutrition & Dietetics April 4, 2014]]
Should that be alarming? No more than they drink grapefruit juice with their medicines. But the news headline prompts undue alarm. And the public isn’t buying it this time.
Some herbal molecules like those found in grapefruit juice do contain molecules that inhibit the liver detoxification of drugs. There are a number of liver enzymes (known as cytochrome p450 enzymes) that normally dull the effects of drugs. But molecules like those found in grapefruit juice inhibit these enzymes and make the drugs more powerful. That might be beneficial, but in the case of blood pressure-lowering drugs, it might result in blood pressure dropping too far and the patient experiencing transient dizziness.
