Aw, another vitamin study fizzles. Just when almost-everybody is taking vitamin pills in hopes of staving off a COVID-19 infection, a study concludes two mainstays of dietary supplementation, mega-dose vitamin C and high-dose zinc, failed to shorten the number of days of symptomatic infection among 214 adult outpatients freshly diagnosed with COVID-19. Investigators concluded “these supplements cannot be recommended to reduce symptom morbidity in such patients.” Or can they?
A pretty hefty dose of vitamin C (8000 milligrams in divided doses) was given to these COVID-19 patients, diagnosed by the notoriously inaccurate PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test that yields many false positives. Given that vitamin C is rapidly excreted, doses spread out over time achieve higher blood serum concentrations than a single mega-dose. According to one study, the optimal vitamin C frequency is 4 times a day.

I recently had occasion to forward an email to others about the “casedemic,” the fact new cases of COVID-19 remain high because of excessive testing but deaths are down considerably. The report shows how a panic can be caused by news reports citing an increase in cases which spawn draconian lockdown measures.

A growing body of published studies indicate vitamin D supplementation may allay the symptoms and severity of COVID-19 infections, enough to keep hospitalized patients out of the intensive care unit. The most recent of these studies, published in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Aug 29,2020) is more than convincing.
But this remarkable study is not likely to change the practices of modern medicine, even though it completely abolished COVID-19-related deaths in the intensive care unit (ICU) and reduced admission from a standard COVID-19 care ward to the ICU from 50% to 2%.
The study involved 76 hospitalized patients who were COVID-19-positive and had symptoms of coronavirus infection such as dry cough, shortness of breath, fever and diarrhea who were on a standard-care COVID-19 hospital ward.

Given that an estimated 100 million American adults are diabetic or pre-diabetic, will this sub-population begin to receive prescriptions for vitamin D from their doctors? This question is now asked because of a revealing study showing diabetics in particular are at 4.5-times greater risk for an early death when their blood levels of vitamin D are low. The risk of death from infectious disease also doubles for individuals who are deficient in vitamin D.
While an abject deficiency of vitamin D is defined as a blood concentration of 10 nanomoles per liter of blood, survival data confirms “a strong association of vitamin D deficiency (under 50 nanomoles/liter or 20 nanograms/millilter) with increased mortality.”

It’s worth clicking through to look at Dr. Paul Merik as he speaks at NPR.org about saving thousands of lives with vitamin C therapy and see the medical student in the background wiping back her tears….. For the first time, after hundreds of failed drug trials, patients are rapidly recovering from blood poisoning (aka sepsis) and leaving the hospital three days later. And this discovery doesn’t come from Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Harvard Medical School or the Mayo Clinic. How about Eastern Virginia Medical School!
Click to hear a nurse speak: “We would just go day and after day, they (the patients) just weren’t getting any better… it (vitamin therapy) just seemed too simple…. We thought it had to be a fluke, but we had patients getting better. Patients were turning around quickly, within 12 hours. They would be at death’s door, and 12 hours later they were 50% better… we have seen patients walk out of here that we didn’t think would leave alive. I have goose bumps now.”

A quick read of recent news headlines suggest most Americans must be dumb and dumber for taking dietary supplements.

A newly published report published in the journal Biogerontology calls zinc therapy to quell the age-related decline in the immune system.
As people age and grow old so does their immune system, making them prone to life-threatening infections from microbes that would have normally have been intercepted in young adulthood by memory T-cells that in turn produce antibodies that result in life-long immunity.
Zinc plays a key role in priming the human immune system throughout life. Far too many Americans living in a well-fed country are zinc deficient.

Quick, all you savvy readers who know about vitamins, without any further investigation, which antioxidant vitamin listed below is NOT known to exert therapeutic benefits for coronary artery disease?
There is no trick to the above question. It is well documented that vitamins E, C, D and K may be beneficial in preventing and treating coronary artery disease. Most astute followers of vitamin therapy would likely say vitamin A shouldn’t even be on the list.

Unnecessary hysterectomies are in decline but still 1 in 5 women who undergo the procedure may not need this operation.
Putting young women on birth control pills which depletes folic acid that then induces breaks in DNA in the uterine lining which in turn produces an abnormal Pap smear that results in a hysterectomy is still a shameful practice.
